A Global Consultant’s View on e-Invoicing: Luke Hutchings on the “E‑Invoicing Pulse”
As a Director of e-Invoicing and Tax Technology at Alvarez & Marsal, Luke Hutchings spent around eight years working across the Middle East before moving into global e‑invoicing projects. That broader vantage point shapes his view of compliance, from what it takes to get a project right to why he still enjoys the work after years of change. ⚙️
For Luke, e‑invoicing boils down to three words: “compliance, accuracy, and convenience.” 🎯
No e‑invoicing project, he insists, can be run by a single department. “Even though the budget may sit with IT, or finance, or tax, you still need to have all of those stakeholders involved,” he says, “or you won't identify all the requirements.”
For anyone still attached to the PDF, his message is blunt: “It's time to change.” He's quick to add that the shift cuts both ways – a compliance deadline set by tax authorities can just as easily become a genuine cost‑saving opportunity, a chance to refine processes and tighten controls, provided IT is involved early in choosing and implementing a solution. Leave them out of that decision, he warns, and the same project becomes a real headache once it goes live.
Luke also shared his take on where human judgment still outpaces automation, and the one piece of advice he gives every team that feels like it's already behind on its deadline.
